OVERVIEW

Where it started

Where it started

QuickXChange is a concept for a fast and transparent currency exchange platform. The project explores how complex financial information can be simplified into a clear, user-friendly experience that supports confident decision-making — on the go and offline.

The design covers both a mobile app for quick on-the-go exchanges and a website for account management and detailed financial overviews.

Small details — wording, layout, and feedback — can significantly impact user confidence in a financial context.

GOAL

Design a simple and trustworthy currency exchange experience — without confusion, hidden fees, or outdated rates. A clean, intuitive app that shows up-to-date rates, clearly communicates fees, and allows quick conversions online and offline.

RESEARCH

Understending the problem

Understending the problem

Through surveys and desk research I explored how users compare exchange rates, what builds trust in a financial app, and where existing solutions fall short.

Rate accuracy

Users feel unsure and frustrated when exchange rates don't seem accurate or up to date — accuracy is the primary trust signal.

Fee transparency

Hidden fees quickly break trust. People want to clearly understand what they're paying and why before committing to an exchange.

Interface complexity

When the interface feels complicated, users feel slowed down and worried about making mistakes — especially with money.

Offline access

Travelers appreciate having access to basic exchange information even without internet — offline mode is a meaningful differentiator.

User personas

Angelo is a budget traveler who needs a straightforward way to check and convert currencies on his phone — making informed decisions while sticking to his travel budget.

GOALS:

  • Check rates quickly in unfamiliar places, especially when planning daily expenses

  • Minimize fees while exchanging small amounts frequently

  • Find nearby exchange services or reliable app-based conversion options

FRUSTRATIONS:

  • Lack of an easy way to track his preferred currencies over time

  • Unclear fees and inconsistent rates when exchanging currencies while traveling

BEHAVIOR:

  • Frequently checks exchange rates and compares currencies before making payments or transfers.

  • Uses the app while traveling across different countries

  • Prefers fast, clear actions and relies on familiar patterns to avoid mistakes when handling finances.

"I just want to know exactly what I'm getting and avoid any surprises - keeping it simple helps me focus on enjoying the journey."

Competitive audit

I evaluated Revolut, PayPal, and Xe to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and gaps. These apps excel at real-time rate tracking and user trust, but fall short on offline functionality and fee transparency — areas QuickXChange directly addresses.

Information architecture

Information architecture

The app is structured around five key sections: Exchange, Tools, Nearby ATMs, History, and Profile — ensuring intuitive navigation for performing financial tasks efficiently.

Sketching the structure

During ideation, I translated user pain points into possible solutions — exploring ways to simplify the conversion flow and build trust through clarity and feedback. Early concepts kept the main action, currency conversion, front and centre.

DESIGN

Visual direction

Visual direction

The design phase focused on clarity and usability. A lightweight visual style, clear hierarchy, and familiar UI patterns were used to help users feel confident and in control. Special attention was given to readability, spacing, and visual cues that guide users through the exchange process.

Lo-fi wireframes

Lo-fi wireframes

Low-fidelity wireframes were used to quickly explore layout options and key user flows — selecting currencies, entering amounts, and viewing results — without visual details getting in the way.

The final outcome

The final design delivers a clear and user-friendly currency exchange experience — allowing users to quickly convert currencies and understand rates and fees at a glance. The mobile app supports on-the-go use, while the website focuses on account management and a more detailed financial overview.

What I learned

What I learned

Designing for trust

Finance-related design requires extra attention to how information is presented. Small decisions around wording, layout, and feedback carry more weight than in other contexts — trust is earned through every detail.

Simplicity as a feature

The biggest challenge was not adding features, but deciding what to leave out. Reducing cognitive load in a financial app required restraint — every extra element was weighed against whether it helped or hindered the user's confidence.
